“I love quotations because it is a joy to find thoughts one might have, beautifully expressed with much authority by someone recognized wiser than oneself.” — Marlene Dietrich

14 Lines for 4 Years

Four years ago, I hit send on the very first TwentyPercenter. I had no idea if anyone would read it. (Hi, Mom!) More than 200 issues later, here we are.

One of the hardest and most rewarding parts of this job is finding the right quote for an article. So for our fourth birthday, I dug through the files and picked 14 of my favorites. One short list of borrowed wisdom. Enjoy.

  1. “Nothing can change until the unsaid is spoken.” — Keith Cunningham
  2. “On the days you only have 40%, and you give 40%. You gave 100%.” — Jim Kwik
  3. “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” — James Baldwin
  4. “The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.” — Henry David Thoreau
  5. “If busyness is your drug, rest will feel like stress.” — Ian Simpkins
  6. “This feels hard because it is hard, not because you're failing.” — Dr. Becky Kennedy
  7. “We are so afraid of the pain of rejection that sometimes what we miss is that on the other side of our fear of rejection is actually the connection that we desire.” — Liz Forkin Bohannon
  8. “Usually when we have a problem that is circumstantial, we are facing the reality of life. When we have a problem that is chronic, we are facing the reality of ourselves.” — Brianna Wiest
  9. “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” — Albert Einstein
  10. “He who knows that enough is enough will always have enough.” — Lao Tzu
  11. “Hang out with people for whom your dreams are just another Tuesday.” — Codie Sanchez
  12. “Tension is not conflict. Discomfort is not harm.” — Charlie Gilkey
  13. “If more information was the answer, then we'd all be billionaires with perfect abs.” — Derek Sivers
  14. “It's not going to get easier. It's going to get harder. So, make yourself a person that handles hard well.” — Kara Lawson

One question to ponder in your thinking time: If you could live by just one quote this year, which would it be?

Over 10,000 were wounded or killed. It is widely considered the turning point of WWII. What few know is that General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who oversaw the operation, had real doubts. “Operation Overlord” involved over 5,000 ships and nearly 12,000 aircraft. It was a logistical nightmare. Had the plan...

You pick up a brass lamp and a genie pops out. Woah, I’m about to get three wishes! But she shuts that down fast. You get one wish, and it's multiple choice. With a flourish, she offers, “You can have a year of lucky decisions or a year of wisdom...

In my youth, kids played outside. If you wanted to play video games, you rode your trusty Schwinn Sting-Ray to an arcade with a pocket full of quarters. Sunscreen? It was all about tanning, not avoiding UV rays. SPF didn’t get regulated by the FDA until I was 9. It wouldn’t go...
